Storage Stairs and Other Space Savers

Here's a quick tour of some of the little details in my house that allow me to make efficient use of my space and store things easily. This is always important, but even more so in a very small space. My storage stairs, couch compartments, spice rack doors, inset wall shelves, high book shelf, and gateleg table all help me to more easily keep my house nice and tidy.

  1. Love your Tiny House! It is probably the most attractive and well thought out of all the ones I have looked at......I envy you living off-grid and on your own terms. I also want to thank you for the honesty of your posts on the good and the not so good (and things to really consider beforehand) of tiny house living and building. Keep up the good work!

    1. You're welcome. I do like my life here quite a lot. But when I was looking for info before I moved in I found a lot of post that seemed to say something like, "if you move into a tiny house (or off grid), there will never be a problem, everything will always be perfect and cute, it's always peaceful and involves no work, and you will automatically live happily ever after." Obviously that's not all always true. So I wanted people to have a more realistic idea going in. ;)

  2. Ariel, this week I have read through all your posts, looked at all your photos (coyote pups three times - what a joy!), and I have put away several ideas for our own small home plans at retirement in 31/2 yrs. Definitely will have composite windows, double basin sink, inset wall storage, lower bookshelves, and I very much appreciate your information and photos on composting toilet. Also, Internet info, solar, the list goes on. Your photos are stunning. I think many of them from your backpacking trips I am guessing, are my favorites.
I look forward to your next post. What a wonderful blog! Oh, and nothing looks better to me than books, plants, and a good kitchen! Your home is truly a gem. Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I do write with the hope of being helpful so that's good to hear. And yes, most photos that are not of my house are from backpacking trips. One of my favorite hobbies.

  3. Ariel: I wholly agree with Liane and Una! Thank you so much for such a wonderful and honest blog! Very informative. I'm a new follower and am so happy I've found your site. Thought for your glass shelf. You may be able to put some type of small rope/accessory cord/bungee cord horizontally tacked to the front of the shelves for more security. It won't obscure the view or be a problem with accessing your drinking glasses. Just an idea.
Again - thank you so very much for your blog!

    1. You're welcome! I'm always happy to know it's helpful or enjoyable. I really don't have a problem with the security of the glass stuff. Several people have asked about it, that's why I mentioned it, but I've never come even close to knocking anything off yet.
