Summertime and Visitors

Beautiful summer weather is here. Hot sunny days, warm summer nights, sunlight pouring through the trees. It really is quite lovely around here!

As you know if you've been following this blog for a while, I moved a lot of rocks from around my house. They left a lot of holes. I've filled most of them, but this one became a really tiny nest site before I got it filled. First I saw the empty nest, then three eggs and now four. The mom's been sitting on it for a while now so maybe soon I can get some shots of the babies soon!

This buck has visited my house pretty regularly and it's been fun watching his antlers grow out.

And something else came by that I didn't see. Maybe a raccoon or skunk? It is so fun to see the stuff that visits my house.

  1. It looks so beautiful up there! How is your garden? I know that buck is probably very interested in what you have growing! I was wondering what you plan to do with all your produce? Most people with a garden have so much at harvest time, they have to preserve some for later, but you don't have a ton of storage room.

    1. It's doing well. And yes, he and all the other deer, moose, and elk seem to like my garden. I ended up putting up a fence last week to keep them out. So far, it seems to be working.

I cook for a lot of people so I am afraid I might be able to use everything I can produce right away, at least this year as I get things established. But, if I do have extra, I plan to can, pickle, or dry some things and while I don't have a ton of space I do have a pretty deep pantry and can create a more useful storage space in my second loft. I also hope to build a root cellar into the side of the hill before fall and can store many things in there.

    2. I want to come live with you! LOL (but seriously if I could I would!) :-) I've been reading your blog and watching your youtube videos and am constantly amazed at all the knowledge you have. There are so many things you've mentioned, talked about doing, things your growing, finding and how you put it all to use and it just amazes me. It goes to show the magnitude of different lifestyles and upbringings we all have. I truly wish you the best and hope I can learn and educate myself while taking this journey with you if only through this blog and your videos! Thank you for sharing with us!

  3. Love the idea of a root cellar. Make sure you account for drainage... a root cellar should be cool and dry.

    1. I doubt that will be a big problem with the rocky hill side I have to build it in, but I will keep it in mind. Thank you.
