Grizzly in the House!

I know, I know, it was just too great of a title to resist! Announcing the addition of Grizzly the dog to my household here at Fy Nyth. Check out this quick video for an introduction to my new girl!

She seems to enjoy the couch quite a bit already and be comfortable in the house. I expected warming up to and trusting a new person to take some time given her past. But I think we will be a good fit for each other as from my own experience I can relate to giving your life to someone and then being dumped out of the blue for someone new.

Since I finished the above video, she's already become a lot more comfortable with me. Actually approaching me instead of shying away, and by this evening, even coming over and resting her head on my knee a few times while wagging her tail. That melted my heart!

Look at those eyes! Isn't she beautiful? So far anyway, she's been very well behaved. Good leash manners, travels well in the van, is very gentle with everything around her, and does not seem to have any desire to run away.

She's been exploring my little clearing and just seems curious about everything. Including the newly falling snow which we are finally getting a little more of!

She's even starting to show a little bit of a playful side though long naps seem to be something she enjoys quite a lot.

We even encountered this huge herd of elk while driving near my house and while she was very interested and alert, she stayed seated quietly and didn't bark at them. I think she may be a good companion on wildlife photography drives which is exciting.

I hope you all enjoyed the shortest day of the year, and I look forward to a little more daylight as we go forward from here!

  1. I am so very happy for both of you! She is indeed a beautiful companion. Your post title definitely grabbed my attention. Even my husband came to see the story and usually he is content to hear about your posts second hand from me. Loved the video!

  3. Thank you for the feel-good story at Christmas! She's beautiful. LOVE LOVE LOVE the fuzzy ears. Thank you for being willing to take an older dog that someone so unkindly tossed aside for something newer & shinier. I hope they have more kindness and compassion for their "new" dog. May you and Grizzly have many happy years together.

  4. She spent 1.5 years in that shelter waiting for you to come take her home. I think you are both lucky to have found each other and I hope both of you enjoy the time that you do have ahead of you. It looks like she is settling in quite well and will soon be looking for her Princess crown. She is a beautiful animal and those eyes can see right thru you. Enjoy your new companion.

  5. A question please. What was the piano piece at the end of your video? It almost sounds like something from Norah Jones but I cannot place it. Thanks.

  6. I've been lurking here for a while, but haven't commented before. But this post made me cry, so I decided to de-lurk. Blessings upon you for adopting a dog who really needed a home. Reading this was a wonderful Christmas present.

  7. From the title I expected to see the inside of your home wrecked, couldn’t resist could you :-)

Glad to see you got yourself a dog. Griz looks fantastic and appears to be comfortable there. A dog was the only thing you were missing in your life. I like dogs more than people because they are totally loyal. Take care of her feelings, feed her fresh clean food and fresh clean water and she will always be loyal and will give her life for you without hesitation. Congratulations Griz, you got lucky with your new mom and home!

  8. She is an absolutely gorgeous dog!! Thank you for giving her a home, and she must feel that connection already with you since she's not trying to run away. That's how my life has been with my newest addition to my herd, Snuggles, since this past spring. It's a great feeling to know you can give them a great home.

  10. Ariel -
You make my own heart nearly burst - both near-tears and definitely joyous. I see your allusion to a previous one as well. With the perspective of a 58 y/o, you are an exquisite being. Regardless of the pain, even with the pain, this will always be so...and so apparent. You are both beautiful girls. Thank you for your choice - and your sharing. THIS is worthy of a holiday:) Such warm blessings to both of you.

  11. She's adorable. I'm horrified that someone tossed her out into the scary world, but thank you for giving her a furever home. She's full of love & you'll give her the safety to share it.

  13. A fine addition to Fy Nyth and I bet she will become, if she hasn't already, be fan of the woodstove too. Speaking of which...are you still cooking on the wood stove or has your new range arrived?

  16. Love your blog and cooking hints.....:) Since you like reading, you might like the Earth Children series by Jean M. Auel, 1st book starts with "Clan of the Cave Bear". It's about strong, independent woman, not unlike yourself.

  17. Ariel, Having have newly. discovered your your Youtube channel and now your blog, I have to say I am thoroughly and impressed and also captivated by your first hand knowledge and experience you have shared. I will incorporate much of what you designed and created. The metal roof makes much sense. I live in a climate where I could collect rain water for 6-8 months of the year so a collection system would work for me. Your use of space is so practical and also tasteful. I come from the yacht world and appreciate order. Cork flooring makes much sense and add a bit to the R-value. All plumbing within the structure - thumbs up! Nice you are able to have a decent propane supply - wonder how you get those refilled? How about plowing to maintain access? I live in Vermont right now and dont get nearly as much snow as you! Nice work and a very inspiring presentation! Have you considered writing a book??? I love my books on sailing, adventuring, survival, building and living sensibly. I would surely buy yours if you ever publish.
