My lofts

My storage loft finally have some organization. And so far has kept my great grandmother's hope chest among other things.

This shop is looking at my sleeping loft and the top of the stairs going to it.

My bed. It's a bit hard to make a bed very neatly when you have a puffy down comforter and a mattress on the floor.

Another shot where you can see my nightstand which is another old chest. This one also happens to store old journals, repair and sewing stuff, and a few other things inside.

My closet and the foot of my bed which also forms the wall that give my bedroom some privacy. This does still have a mess of unorganized stuff on top as you can see. But it contains backpacking gear and food, camera gear, as well as some clothing and shoes.

Looking over toward the top of the stairs.

The view out of my window right at the head of my bed.

Looking into the loft from the top of the stairs.

  1. What is the height of your sleeping loft in the middle of the room and at the edges of the room? What are the overall dimensions of the sleeping loft?

    1. It is 45'' in the middle and 34'' on the sides. The floor dimensions, counting the space that is partially occupied by my closet/wall are 78'' by 105''. I hope that's helpful!

  4. Hey Ariel,
How do you access your storage loft?! And what made you decide on storage stairs opposed to a ladder with a closet? Love your layout & tiny house insight too :)

    1. I just stand on my couch or a chair. This works for me because I'm kinda tall. I like the stairs because they are easier for some people to climb than a ladder. I have clothing that is easier to store in a drawer than in a closet, and I can sit on or set things on them if I want to. And thank you.

    2. I'm thinking about the stairs too, but I'm worried about the storage loft. I'm around 5'8. How tall would I be standing on your bench/or a chair? Would my head be able to see over the edge of the loft? Can you get into your trunk to easily access things, or is it more of long-term storage up there!

      Thanks for your help!

    3. I'm just a hair over 5'8'' myself, but I do have long arms. And yes, I can see over the loft. That trunk I have is a bit hard to open where I have it since the roof gets in the way of the lid. I only have things in there I access very rarely. I really only kept the trunk since it was my great-grandmothers, not because it's the most convenient or efficient use of that space.

  5. Is there a lack of heat in your loft due to your closet at the foot of your bed. I'd love a closet like that but Husband thinks it would block air flow? Thanks.. I love your tiny house!!! Great job and congrats...

    1. No and yes. It does block some heat, but that's a good thing. Heat rises and I didn't really want where I slept to be the hottest spot. I sleep better when I'm cool. So no, there is not a lack of heat, but yes, it does partially block the air flow. I hope that helps and thanks!

  6. Can you tell me more about your storage stairs? We are building a tiny house and I love how compact yours are. Did you make them? Buy them? I would love more info. Thanks!

    1. They were built for me by Tumbleweed. I believe they are based on Jay Shafer's plans which you can find here. http://www.fourlightshouses.com/pages/compact-furnishings

  7. Noooo! I saw buckets of wool in the first loft? You like knitting and crocheting? Anything to show for those yarns?

    1. I do like to knit, but it's something I have not made time for in several years.
