Tiny Spring Chores

It was a lovely sunny day here at Fy Nyth. The snow is almost all gone with only a few patches left in the shadiest spots now.

I was able to spend time washing the outside of the windows for the first time since I moved in right at the start of winter. I hate window washing personally, but it is certainly nice to have them all looking sparkly and free from the road dirt that was on some of them since delivery.

And then I worked on stripping off all the door to a bunch of reclaimed old lockers that are going to shortly be forming a ring of planters surrounding my house. They should also double as a skirting of sorts. I can't wait to get them filled up with dirt and get at least a few hardy flowers growing. Sadly, our last frost date here is still almost 10 weeks away.

I was also able to work on several other projects since I still have a few days off before I go back to work. I painted my large propane tank black so it blends into my surroundings better. The white it originally was didn't really stand out until almost all the snow melted, but now it does. Then topped off my water tank, kicked the generator on the top off my batteries, and did a little work on my remodeling project on the interior of my camper van. Later I cooked up some dinner, washed a pile of dishes, and spent some time reading and writing. Having two full weeks off has been pretty nice after working almost every day all winter!

Turning old lockers into planters.

My now black propane tank.

And the sparkly outsides of my windows. I should have taken a shot before I washed them just for the impressive comparison!

  1. Ariel, careful on painting the propane tank... A darker color on the tank will cause it to retain more heat.. and will drive up the pressure in the tank..

    Good read here: http://www.propane101.com/propanetankcolor.htm

    1. I was not aware of that issue. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, I may have to rethink the color or move it to where it would always be shaded.

  2. You have a wonderful tiny house! I love the beautiful and welldone details and that you choose to live off grid. :) Wonderful! I am living in Sweden, in a small cottage near the mountains (these are piles of dirt compared to yours) and I am just now building a "tiny house inspired" house on my grounds, to rent out. I am a crafts woman, Goldsmith and dressmaker/seamstress and have my own little shop in a building that I also made myself.
I found you thrue some tiny house links and will add you to favourites! Wishing you luck and the best in your beautiful house and nature! :) Greetings from Sweden, Linnea

    1. Wonderful! Your place sounds lovely. I have never been to Sweden but I'm sure it is beautiful as well even if I have larger mountains. And than you for the kind wishes.

    1. Small world. I grew up in PA and my parents now live directly north of Hagerstown. And hey, if it's something you really want to do, go for it! Don't just live through me.

  4. Hello, found your blog on FB and your tiny house is wonderful! The scenery is just amazing, even in the wintertime! I was wondering what your land situation was like; if you were able to buy or are renting the space out? It seems like it's getting easier to find tiny homes to buy, but finding a place to put them is a little more difficult. Thanks for your time!

    1. Thank you! I barter cooking and ranch work in exchange for parking on a friend's property. And yes, somewhere to live in one is probably the hardest part of moving into a tiny house.

  5. I was just going to say, I'll bet there's a reason propane tanks are white. Then I read the other comments and saw someone else mentioned the same thing.
I like the old-lockers-as-skirting idea! I'll bet cutting down on airflow under the trailer will have an insulating effect, too?

    1. Yeah I had not thought about that, but now my black tank is tucked into a spot where it's shaded 100% of the time. They should cut down on air flow, but my floor is so insulated there's not a whole lot of heat lost anyway. Is this the Karen Conley I know in PA?
