Camouflaging Fy Nyth

In the interest of trying to blend into my surroundings nicely and not have anything that would stand out or possibly annoy someone else, I just completed staining my whole house. I did like the golden brown tone, but now Fy Nyth is a little grayish brown house, and I like it better than I though I would actually. Above you can see what she looked like half finished. Below in the shot through the trees, you can see the amazing amount of difference in how much the two shades show up. The grey almost disappears while the golden brown stands out quite a bit.

I've never stained anything in my life, but I think this project turned out ok. With a few knots in my neck from holding a paint brush for too long, but nothing too bad. It's kind of fun to have some things I can say I did all by myself since I can't claim the credit for actually building my house by myself.

Now I'm getting closer to all settled into my new little clearing. In case you were wondering, it takes just a little less than one gallon of semi transparent stain to cover my entire home. We guessed it'd take more than that however so I have a whole untouched second gallon to use whenever this wears off. Hopefully not for many years!

  1. Beautiful job you've completed there! I think it blends in very well and the new location appears much more private.

    1. Thank you. It is and I like it a lot. In this little spot you can really feel like you might be the only person living in the rocky mountains and it might be sometime in the 1800's.

  2. I wouldn't have considered a grey color before. That really turned out nice! Very inspiring.

    1. Thank you. And I hadn't considered it either honestly. A friend had a little leftover stain from another project and suggested I try it. And I liked it a lot so I bought a gallon to match and am pretty pleased with the results.

  4. I really like it - it blends in so well in its new colour. Just found you - been receiving the Tiny Houses newsletter for years and so want to live in one of these, so it's fascinating reading your story.

  5. Kudos for your new colour and staining job! Looks great! Just found your site and wondered if you'd ever contacted, on Facebook, Tiny House, Big Adventures? https://www.facebook.com/LittleHouseBigAdventures?fref=ts
She lived in Alaska for awhile in a Tumbleweed. It's for sale. She moved to upstate NY and is having another tiny built for her there. Someone else in a cold climate tiny house, she was not off grid. Sherry

    1. Thank you! I have not talked to her but am aware of her and have looked at her house. It's very nice and seems like it should be a great deal for someone who wants to buy one and continue to live in a cold area.

  6. Hi Ariel,

Would you be willing to state your job position? I'm interested in knowing what career path would allow for this type of lifestyle.

    Best,

    1. I work three days a week as a waitress. In some of my free time I do ranch work and gardening in exchange for being able to park on that ranch. No career at all, but I have the ability to do what I want and what I enjoy with most of my time and that is pretty amazing.

    1. It's a semi-transparent wood stain base and the color was custom mixed. It's basically a really dark grey. I know the guy added a ton to black and in the can it looked way too dark. But with the way it goes on the wood I really liked the result.

    2. Thanks. I will try this on mine. Want it to blend in more naturally and this stain looks the best I've seen. Much appreciated.

    1. It was from our small local hardware store and is a semi-transparent acrylic wood stain base. The color was custom mixed. It's a really dark grey but I don't have any kind of color code for it. I know the guy added a ton of black and in the can it looked way too dark. But with the way it goes on the wood somewhat transparent, it looks lighter.

  9. I also have reason to prefer a less conspicuous house and think this color would be perfect. Is your exterior siding cedar or pine?

    1. It's cedar. The color does blend in really well with a pine forest. I thought a brown would be better, but a friend suggested this and I'm very happy with it.
