Watch the Grizzly Family Near My Tiny House

Those bears I talked about visiting my house last fall? Here you can watch Grizzly 399 with her whole family! Again, this footage was all from late last year. Yes, bears do hibernate in the winter but this family did not go to bed till early January so there was lots of snow on the ground before that happened. In the week and a half or so they spent near my house, I was able to record a lot of them just doing their bear things. Napping, playing, berry picking, chasing moose out of their nap spots, and more.

I was able to just sit and enjoy watching their interactions privately. If you have ever seen her in the national park where she has lived for 25 years, you know that's a big deal because she's usually surrounded by hundreds or thousands of folks. And this is why I don't tend to share photos or videos of popular animals right when they are in a particular spot. To help prevent them from being harassed by large crowds of paparazzi. But this was a very special circumstance for me to be able to have one of the most famous wild animals in the world visit the tiny house! And I'm glad to be able to share that with you all. Minus the hours of sitting around waiting for them to reappear when they were hidden behind brush, trees, etc. So you just get to see all the fun stuff! ☺ In the first video, they are mostly playing and napping.

And here you can see more footage of Grizzly 399 and her four cubs as they picked and munched berries last fall near my house. It was fascinating to be able to watch them pick dried berries from the same wild patches that I myself had picked buckets full from earlier in the year. I'm still enjoying canned, dried, and frozen berries right now that I harvested from these exact same wild patches that you can see the bears picking from in this video.

I recently heard this whole family has awakened for the spring.  I have not seen them and they are no where near my home last I heard. All four cubs are still with their mama where they will remain for the year. Learning more about how to be good bears, where to find food, and so on.

But here's some more fun photos of when they were here last year. Watching them use their "hands" to pull branches down to be able to reach the berries just like I do is so neat I think!

Check out the length of her claws!

It's an experience I will always treasure to have had this bear family visit and be able to watch them for so long. And I hope some of you enjoy watching wild creatures do their thing as much as I do!

  1. I hope you have at least one grizzly-powered firearm with you when you're outside, since NO animal is completely predictable.

  2. Ariel, this is so amazing! They are such beautiful, magnificent creatures. How close did they acually come to your Tiny House? I'm sure you had to be very watchful when going outside as well as when Burley went out. Is Burley aware of the danger of getting to close to them? Thank you Ariel for sharing such an amazing experience with us.

  3. Where I live, it's a thrill when I see a deer, a rabbit or even a skunk. To be able to see this mama grizz and her family would probably make me faint! They are so beautiful!
