Skunked!

Woo hoo! This is a new one for me. No photo or video for this. When smellchat comes out, I'll send you one. One or more of my kitties just lost an argument with a skunk. Right outside the door/couch end of my house. Not sure if they got sprayed or not, they're all hiding now, but the surface and air all around my door smell awful. It only took seconds for that odor to permeate my house, even with everything closed up. Now I'm going to be bummed that it's supposed to be sunny for the next three days. A heavy rain tonight would be nice......

I'm not sure if this was a random run in? I know they are around, but I've never seen a skunk by my house before. Or if it came around looking for cat food. The kitties may have to be feed only in day light when I'm around from now on. Once it's day light again, I'll go investigate. No blundering into a skunk in the dark tonight for me thank you.

  1. Misty says there is a special skunk-spray you can buy at pet stores that will deodorize your kitties. Might ask them if it works on walls too.

  2. I've always heard that skunks love cat good.

  3. Oh no!!! How horrible! That smell is so terrible! And clings to EVERYTHING!!!
I would not leave out any cat food, because skunks, possums, raccoons and even bears are quite fans of pet food! Put out their food bowls for half an hour and then take up anything left at the end.

  4. You may want to also really seal up the bottom of your home to keep animals out from under it. You really don't want a skunk under your house if it lets go. Don't ask me how I know.

  5. Yikes! I hadn't ever even considered skunks to be an issue. Down here in Texas it'd be the possums. Or maybe an occasional armadillo. Both of which aren't terribly bothersome and don't rank! Eeks. I hope your house clears quickly. :-P

  6. Ah man!! Yes, skunks do like cat food. We have been lucky to have had a kind of co-habitation with skunks and outdoor cats but I don't know how that happened. Maybe be hopeful and patient? Skunks are shy and cats are not shy. Also, there are three cats. Good luck!

  7. Oh, so sad. One of my cats had that experience, too, and I stuck her in the kitchen sink with the dish drainer over her to keep her confined, and poured tomato juice over her. That was the recommended cure at the time. Since that's over 30 years ago, I forget how it worked, but I guess it did, because I don't remember doing anything else for her. Poor thing, she was white, and the tomato juice did look ghastly on her. lol Best of luck with yours. S/he isn't likely to tangle with one again. Once burned, twice shy.

  8. Oh crud, that is the worst smell. We've had dogs get sprayed, but knock wood none in years. Hope a heavy rain and a strong breeze come your way.

  9. If the skunk got the cats, you can use canned tomato juice to counteract it.. Problem is you have to wash the cats with it. It works great on Dogs but they'll usually let you wash them... Cats OTOH aren't going to take kindly to that. So I'm putting in a second vote for tomato juice.

  10. Just to update everyone, since my kitties all live outside anyway, I just left him alone, and after a while the smell wore off. I have not seen or smelled another skunk since that night so hopefully it moved on.
