Deepening Snow

Over the past week or so, the snow pack on the ground has deepened a good bit. From the above photo to just a little deeper now than you can see in the photo below.

The blue skies with the white snow are always so beautiful I think. And above, you can see just how much sun touches this little north facing clearing in the winter. There's a maybe 4 hours of daylight where the sun reaches through the trees this much, if it's not snowing, and that's it. If you're looking to move to a northern climate, and especially if you like growing things, keep aspect (north facing vs south) in mind as it has a huge impact on what you can grow!

Burley of course adores bounding through the snow as much as ever. And we both enjoy watching all the little birds. At this time of year, all the summer ones are gone and it's just the few faithfuls who stay here with us year round. Mostly chickadees and nuthatches, along with a few of these Hairy Woodpeckers, a few Stellers Jays, and an occasional Pine Grosbeak.

Walks through the woods, and especially lots of chasing sticks through the deepening snow, wear Burley out enough to make him crash sound asleep right in front of the wood stove. I always enjoy watching him sleep, he's so peaceful. :)

Though I love shoveling, and usually do at least 5 houses, I'm very thankful for the guy who blows out the lane for us and his tractor. Isn't Fy Nyth just inviting at night?

    2. Someone just let me know it doesn't show up the same if you are on a phone which I was not aware as I don't have a smart phone. But from any laptop or desktop, it's the first thing on the righthand side.

  3. I'm in Minnesota, we don't have as much snow as you have. It's fun to see Burley and you enjoying outdoor time. Our 2 yr old pup named Oliver just loves the snow too. Oliver is black lab and coon hound mix, mostly lab and adores fetch like your Burley does. Take care and hope to see more entries in the blog and fingers crossed for videos on YT.

    1. That sounds like a breed combo that would be very motivated to chase and fetch! Enjoy your snow as well.

  6. Ariel, I love your photo shoots and your stories! I hope youtube doesn't lose out on having a member as talented as you are. I am a very small channel regarding retired living -- no comparison to what you produce. I wish I could! You have such an interesting, artistic, amazing life! Bless you!!

  7. Thanks for the lovely pics. We have had a about a of snow followed by 50 degrees and rain so really its all just mud til it refreezes. I love snow when it falls, but then I want it all gone the next day so I've been quite happy.

    1. That is one advantage of it just being cold and snowy for 8+ months with no break. No mud. :) I'm glad you're able to be in an area where the weather does just what you like!

  8. You've made me delightfully nostalgic about snow again! I'm hardwired to make chili and cinnamon rolls when that happens.

  11. Envious of your snow just a lot of rain and for here on the east coast. But looking forward to when we are tucked into our THOW and enjoying the peace, nature and tranquility of the West in winter. TYFS, and sure hoping YT continues without the ridiculous policy plan.

    1. Well stay dry in the meantime! Yeah it's more of a matter of which policy is continued since we are talking about the federal government. And it going away entirely, while probably ideal, is unlikely.

  12. I think Fy Nyth always looks inviting, but the snow, especially at night, definitely adds some extra charm. We're finally getting some snow here in Kansas! I'm super excited. My dog and I love snow, too. Maybe not as much as you and Burley do, haha, but we enjoy it when we get it. We took a nice long walk in ours this morning. Thanks for sharing such lovely photos of your beautiful snow! Sending warm and cozy thoughts your way.

  13. Nest Lady Ariel,
I am curious if you have ever watched the video - documentary The Wyoming blizzard of '49?? A very fascinating story! It would be interesting to speak with a survivor of that huge freak snow storm when life was much different! Maybe you can do a first hand account interview from a survivor sometime??
Hope you are staying warm and don't forget to make a snow creme video sometimes?! Blessings of Peace from S. Carolina

    1. I don't think I saw a documentary on it, but I'm familiar with the history. Sounds like something that would be interesting to look up.

  14. It is the very beginning of summer here in Tasmania, with heatwaves and fires to come. To see blankets of snow is so attractive! Thanks as always for sharing. Robert

  15. I love your posts. They always bring a part of your life that goes well with the photos you post. I look back on my own life and remember being cold and coming inside to snuggle over the radiator with a blanket. My dad didn't allow animals in the house so it wasn't until later on in life that I was able to have a dog I could keep in the house. I miss her so much. I had to have her put down a couple of years ago, and now my health doesn't allow me to have another dog. I know that you have put much effort into the life you now have, but truly you are blessed as well. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Aww thanks! Yeah my parents had the same rules about animals in the house when I was young. Sorry to hear you lost your companion. Having a good one is such a blessing and that's always hard.
