A Bit of Recent Tiny House Life

Just some quick glimpses into what we've been doing around the tiny house lately. The good part of the way I've chosen to live for years now is that my normal life is apparently pretty close to what people call quarantine. 🙂 So other than not being able to workout in the gym a couple times a week, my life is pretty much the same as normal. And for this I feel very
fortunate for sure! So here's some of what Burley and I have been doing in the last little while.

Continuing to go for long snowshoes, often 6-7 human covered miles per day. He of course gets a lot more in. Living in a fairly remote location, especially in the winter, other humans are something we almost never see in the woods. Though occasionally we'll hear a snow machine somewhere far in the distance, we pretty much have the woods to ourselves.

There's been clouds, sun, rain, wind, and snow. Most days, all of those arrive within a single hour, so it must be spring. 😁 Which results in me doing a lot of layers on, layers off, as we travel to maintain a good body temperature.

We get to see fun things like these pine marten tracks. Or the variety of pretty lichens growing on the side of a dead tree and helping return it to the soil.

The sun pops out and makes the house feel like spring for a minute at times. And then moments after the sunshine, it will look like below again.

And we have almost daily visits from foxes. While I occasionally spot one during the day, most come by at night. I hope they each eat several dozen mice every time they visit as we always have far too many of them in the clearing here. While they have never found their way inside the house, probably thanks to the solid steel plate that makes up the base of the house, they are everywhere outside and regularly eat the air filters in my vehicle. So all the small rodent predators are more than welcome!

There are also tons of birds to enjoy as a wide variety of different beauties frequent the woods around us.

And if I'm too busy to go on a nice long snowshoe that day, Burley gets his exercise in with either his frisbee disk or ring. Both of which he adores chasing for as long as I can throw them! He never wants to stop even if he's panting and exhausted so eventually I have to make him quit by putting the disks out of reach.

So between all those things, reading books, keeping up all the normal household stuff like feeding the wood stove, cooking, etc, photographing wild things, chatting with some of my good friends (many of whom live several thousand miles away so we've maintained those relationships via phone for years), and so on, every day is full and I never have quite enough time for everything I want to get done. I hope you are all finding lots of things you enjoy to fill your days with as well! In fact the next post will probably include a bunch of ideas for that just in case anyone is finding themselves bored at home right now. Hopefully you all have someone who loves you as much as Burley and I love each other to enjoy your time with!

  3. This was a most perfect way to start my day---well, after tending to the cats, that is. Like Burley Man, they have their own schedule and I had darned well better alter mine to satisfy theirs! Be safe, be well, and stay happy! Terry from KLazyY

  4. I enjoy your posts and photos so much. Right now I have been in Baltimore, MD with my mother in law who was diagnosed with stage 4 brain and lung cancer. The state is on a stay at home order but we still have to get out with her and getting radiation treatment. Your posts are a pleasant distraction from the worry and fear of the virus getting to her. She's 69 and with a compromised immune system already she wouldn't fare well if she contracted it. I'm trying to stay strong and positive for her. My husband (her son) is on his way here from TN to get me since I must return home now due to work and other responsibilities. We are hoping he will make it here safely and that he won't be detained in his travel.

  12. You have worked hard step-by-step to achieve the life you have now, and by the pictures, I'd say it's a contented and joyful life for you and Burley. I do miss video of your interactions with him, projects, gardening, hikes/backpacking, cooking/food preservation, maintenance and modification of your tiny home, and more. Could you insert videos on this platform you use now? That would be great if you could and would. Stay healthy and strong.

  14. Turns out that Edison, Bell, and Marconi were way ahead of their time. Particularly during times like this it is nice that we can communicate and share with family even though miles apart. Apparently spring is even slower in Wyoming then here in Washington state.

    1. It is a great blessing to still be able to communicate! Yeah, last year we had new snowfall right up through the official first day of summer at the end of June. :)

  15. Happy day! We are keeping busy now I have finished teaching my online nursing course. Trix and I get out everyday despite the snow still coming down. To fill my time I have decided to learn (via Utube) about tiny houses, canning, gardening and composting. That's how I found you. :-) I spend a few hours each day quilting unfinished projects. And when needed my quilting buddies and I make dog beds out of our scraps for the local humane societies. They need them more than ever now. I love your posts, they are very interesting and inspiring! Cheers from Kim in snowy Kamloops BC Canada

  16. Burley must just love this time and your walks together!
I have tons of things to do even if I don't get outside my apartment, but I have been living in isolation basically for 15 years already. This is just a bit more stringent. I am grateful for being able to do video chats these days!! Stay safe! :)

  17. Hi Ariel,

    Beautiful photography, as always!

Did you see Nikon is offering their online photography courses for free during the month of April? Granted, you could probably teach some of those classes, but I thought you might like to watch them if you haven't done so already! The dynamic landscape course is taught by Taylor Glenn, located in Jackson Hole.

    1. I didn't but that's really cool! Taylor Glenn and I used to work out at the same gym for a while and he sometimes fishes with a friend of mine. He is a great photographer!

  18. Ariel, you might consider using "Mouse Magic" to protect your vehicle from mice. "Mouse Magic" uses peppermint oil and spearmint oil to repel mice. The packets of oil last for about thirty days. Just look up "Mouse Magic" online. You would have to keep the packets away from your dog.

    1. I do. It does seem to slow them down a little. But there are so many mice here that no matter what I do they still come in. Have for all six years I've lived here now. :)

  22. Hi Ariel - I enjoy your blog so much. It’s my favorite. My dream is to have a tiny home someday with a bedroom downstairs. Although stairs don’t bother me now at 65, who knows if I’ll be able to use them when I’m 85! ;-) I know lots of people miss your YouTube videos. I’ve followed your blog from the beginning but can’t do YouTube. We live in rural Iowa and no cable is available and satellite internet is horrible. What do you use for your internet? I’d love to be able to do online classes but all it would do is buffer. I have a hard time trying to send a picture to my grandkids. So frustrating! Anyway, your content and photos are amazing! I think your dog and my dog have the same energy level - go full speed not stop! Give him a hug for me and congratulations to you for such a wonderful blog!

    1. That's lovely to hear! There are some pretty neat layouts I've seen with first floor bedrooms. I have to go with cell based internet as a hardline connection is not an option in my location. Things seem to change all the time, but the best deal I can find at the moment that has unlimited internet is the most expensive option on Sprint that allows unlimited hotspot use with a computer. I don't even use a phone through them, just the internet. Sounds like you have a great companion there too! And you are welcome.

  23. Is there ever going to be a resumption of your videos? I seem to recall another outlet for videos that isn't so restrictive as YouTube. I hope you don't have to take down your YouTube content. I still have some unwatched episodes there. Alan

  24. Can you build an owl box and see if you can get one as a neighbor overlooking your yard to help with the mice population?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would be fun! But the owls who live here are Great Grey's and Great Horned. Neither one from what I read will nest in a box as they are big enough to take over things like hawk and eagle's open nests and use them.
